Eagle Viewing Tours

Eagle LandingEagle Close upEagle Fishing

Every year thousands of eagles congregate in the Squamish Valley to feast on the salmon spawning in the rivers. In our land based eagle viewing tours you will be able to visit locations along these rivers where the eagles gather by the hundreds. The peak periods where the highest number of eagles are present is between mid-December and mid-January, however, there are still significant numbers in November and February

Along the eagle viewing dyke in Brackendale is the easiest way to view the eagles. We will take you there in the comfort of the luxury SUV. There are volunteers at the eagle viewing area with telescopes to watch the eagles and a nearby cafe to warm up or grab a hot coffee.

If you want to get away from the beaten path our drivers know where the eagles like to hang out in the trees and would be glad to take you there. Some spots are right next to the road, others are a short walk through old growth forest. When walking down to the river you may even get a chance to see some salmon in the river

Sample Itinerary

10:00 AM Pick up at your hotel in Squamish
10:15 AM View the eagles from the "Eagle Run Park"
11:00 AM Stop for coffee and warm up.
11:15 AM Take a short walk down to the water's edge to view the eagles from a different vantage point.
12:00 PM Return home for lunch.

Salmon Spawning Tours

Salmon underwaterSalmon SpawningSalmon Close up

In our salmon spawning tours you can watch one of the neatest miracles of nature, salmon returning form the ocean to reproduce in the rivers. Salmon have a very interesting life cycle, they live most of their lives out in the ocean but return to fresh water rivers along the coast lines of Canada to reproduce. When they are strong enough and mature enough they return to the river that they were born to lay their eggs. At certain times of the year, when the conditions are right you can see thousands of them in the rivers. We have different names for the different salmon such as Coho, Chinook, Chum, Pink and Sockeye. So if you want to see and learn about salmon in our rivers this is the perfect tour for you. If you're lucky the eagles will be in the area and you will get to see them at the same time. Black bears are sometimes seen feeding on the spawning salmon but we try and keep our distance or avoid them altogether.

Sample Itinerary

Three hours is usually enough to learn about their lifecycle at the Tenderfoot Creek Hatchery and then find some in the rivers to watch. If you are lucky we can find a calm pool of clear glacial water and actually watch the females lay their eggs and see the males fertilize them after.

Like the rest of our tours, this tour is fully customizable. The sample itinerary below is what we would recommend for a three hour tour.

9:00 AM Pick up at your hotel in Squamish
9:30 AM Visit the Tenderfoot Creek Hatchery. Your driver would be glad to guide you through the hatchery or you can have a self-guided interpretive tour on your own to learn about the salmon's life cycle.
10:45 AM Stop at a bridge to look down at the salmon where they are known to congregate before swimming up further.
11:00 AM Take a short walk down to the river to watch them swim up a shallow reef in the river. Down at river level you can get a better sense of how big they can get, how many there are, and how smelly they can get!
12:00 PM Return home or stop and have lunch!

Estuary Tours

Squamish Estuary

Squamish has so many interesting places to see and things to do. The estuary is where the Squamish River meets the Howe Sound Ocean. It is a place with plenty of food for fish, birds, and seals. It is also world renowned for the consistent winds during the summer, as a result you can also see another species congregating here...the windsurfers and kiteboarders!

On this tour we will take you on a short walk through some trails, boardwalks, and bridges where you will have a good chance at seeing ducks, Canadian geese, eagles, seals, and other birds, which your guide will help you identify.

After your walk, we will take you to the very tip of the spit where you will have excellent views of the Squamish Valley including Diamondhead Mountain, the Mamquam glacier, the Chief, and Shannon Falls. Also, at the tip of the road you can watch the windsurfers cruise up the river and the kiteboarders perform their tricks.

Sample Itinerary

5:00 PM Pick up at your hotel in Squamish
5:15 PM Take a stroll through the trails at the estuary
5:45 PM Have your picture taken at the end of the spit. Watch the windsurfers and kiteboarders play.
6:15 PM Collect some driftwood at the beach and watch the sunset.
